A Living Magazine - Day 303 - Homecoming - Fredericksburg to Washington

This post has an enormous amount of photos and videos. So I'm going to pretty much let them speak for it. I will have quite a bit of commentary about Washington DC in upcoming posts, but this would be a day of strictly being a tourist.

I woke up, packed up and headed into town. There I hung around taking pictures, before catching my train...

I like the design of this bass.

I found a different place: the Hard Times Cafe, instead of Starbucks.
Wish I'd found it earlier in the week.
Nicer place, fast internet. Good muffin.

When the time came to catch the train I went to the station and started a series of videos. The first one shows Fredericksburg, the train ride and the Botanic Garden in Washington, DC...

The next video covers an Oromo protest at the Capitol Building (an ethnic group in Ethiopia being persecuted by the government there) and then my walk to get some lunch...

The persecution of ethnic minorities seemed to be a theme as I found walking past this large display about the Falun Gong (a religious minority in China being harshly persecuted by the government there)...

The Garden Cafe I ate at was in a park next to the National Gallery of Art.

Wouldn't want to find one of these in my tent! Ha!

On my way down the Mall toward the Lincoln Memorial I stopped up at the Washington Memorial and then the World War II Memorial...

A vertical panorama.

Marine One going to the White House.

All states and territories are represented here. I decided it would be a good chance to revisit the states I've walked through, around, and the ones I still have left. Amazing to think there will be 29 in all!

STILL TO COME

As I was walking around the World War II Memorial, Marine One flew back by with whomever they had picked up at the White House, followed by a security helicopter...

I made this next video about the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials (with a quick look at some cherry trees, for my cousin Jeff Conrad) and then the White House...

I read every single bit of engraved text at each monument.
They are too important to me, than to be ignored.
And, I frequently felt a lump in my throat over the profound
natures and legacies of these words.

On one of the columns I saw a strange and symbolic sight:
A blue spider had killed a gray spider and was eating it.

I had ended up at the White House, because I was not able to cross the Potomac River where I thought I could, and was now on my way to Georgetown to a place I'd seen on Google Earth...

The building across the Potomac, in the Rosslyn district of Arlington, VA.
I would spend a bit of time there too--mostly because the prices for food are so much better.

I made this final video of the sleep spot. It was a good campsite, and I would end up keeping it for each of the following nights in Washington...
