A Living Magazine - Grounded in Maine - Day 24 - Serpent Cove: Being Constructive

A night of rain. We really needed it. And, for once it didn't bother me like it usually does. I looked out to see that it had totally stopped...

Since it was raining so heavily from the north side, I lowered the tarp completely during the night. I would raise it back up again, since the wind had died down. This dried it, the rainfly too, and allowed me to air out the sleeping bag...

Down at the beach I saw a bit of activity out on the water. The following is an extreme zoom view across the river...

I left the tent and headed into town to check my emails and upload pictures to the blog. When I stopped at the Sunken Garden I noticed a donation had come in. Oh, happy, happy day! I could actually eat! And, I could bring water back to the campsite, and a snack for later. I saw this on the way to the store...

Once I'd gotten my food and drink, I stopped back by the Wiscasset Common to see if there were any outlets. There were two. I plugged the tablet in and just let it charge while I took some shots of the surrounding buildings...

Congregational Church.

The public library. Closed.

Without a doubt this was my favorite house in town.
The colors looked like carved ice cream; French vanilla, with creamy white moulding.

The computer was totally dead. So, I spent some time working out ideas I'd had for urban camping gear...

How I'm going to winterize the sleeping bag.

I had become desperate for fresh water the night before.
This was a quick idea about how the catch the rain in a bottle.

Packing design for a new backpack.

I needed at least an hour to get the tablet up to 25% power, so I took a couple more shots...

In between WW's.

Once I had a minimum amount of power I headed back to the camp site. There, I checked out the tent to make sure it was okay. Then I harvested a bunch of sea blite and ate that while I milled around, wishing I could just sit without getting in the tent. Sea blite is good in a little bit of sea water...

Since it was due to rain again that night, I also tried a rudimentary water catchment just to see if it would work...

On the beach I looked over and saw that some lobsterman had piled his traps on the marsh. And some woman (maybe his wife) was down there with her red truck waiting for him to return...

Close up of birch bark.

A better look at sea blite.
I harvested about five times this much and then nibbled at it over the evening.

I really wanted to process some pictures, but had no way to hold the tablet. So, I looked around and noticed that one of the branches holding my my stick wall up was bow shaped. So, I tied the loose end to a tree and fastened another branch behind it, then laid short branches across to make a little countertop...

Worked very well.

The rain began to fall just as the mosquitoes emerged from wherever the hell they hang out during the day. And, this made for potential misery. When it got dark I couldn't take the biting and the wet conditions, finally crawling into the tent where I fell asleep quickly...
