I packed up while the pounding was still going on near me. My LED flashlight was getting dimmer and I had to wait for the sky to get a bit lighter. I was okay with the pack up, but wasn't very confident about finding a path out. The guy burying his dead girlfriend (kidding--hopefully) didn't hear me.
I walked back to McDonald's, bought a coffee, and got started on some writing for the day's post. Oh, and I took this of the distance from the day before...
After catching up one post (in five hours), I decided I might be wearing out my welcome at McDonald's. Buying a coffee does not necessarily mean unlimited work time there--not like Starbucks. So, I located the library up off of Main Street downtown, and headed out to find it...
I reached Main Street in only one mile and took a left. Neat architecture...
I thought it was kind of a shame that these antebellum homes were so overgrown.
The front gates were choked with vines and hidden behind bushes.
The above pictures were taken through the bars of the front gates.
Farther down Main things were a little rough...
But as soon as I reached the middle of town everything changed. It was obvious to me that this was where the town money went. Every mid-sized town focuses its resources on the center. Here in Anderson, the buildings around the downtown area were architecturally interesting. There were monuments and sculpture...
The Anderson County Courthouse.
A beautiful mortuary.
Pixel Point Graphics. VERY cool little building.
The Anderson County Library.
I went in and worked until my friend Fay picked me up. She and Jan are the folks I know in Anderson, and it was great to connect!
We went straight to her house. And, she made me the perfect Martini. Finally, I could relax! We (Fay, her husband James and I) spoke for a couple hours and then Jan showed up for a wonderful dinner that Fay had made while we talked. Amazingly, she found the time to make a delicious bread, then meatloaf, mashed red potatoes, and on and on. They had local dill pickles, better than any I've had before. Talk about "stick to your ribs"!
In these situations it is always so incredible; the difference between life on the road and sleeping in the woods, barely getting by, and then this comparable opulence. I felt blessed.
When dinner was over, Fay, Jan and I piled in the car and headed to Jan's house. She had a guest room for each of us--nice guest rooms too. We all hung out, drank wine and chatted about everything under the sun. Jan had to work the next day and went to bed. Fay and I continued talking until the very wee hours, then turned into our respective rooms. This time I slept well in the bed; making it through the whole night without waking. It was a wonderful night.
